As part of our work for National Grid Electricity Distribution to support the community energy sector, we have created a guide for community organisations and local authorities on the topic of navigating the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements.
The Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) was initiated by the government in 2022 and is poised to bring about significant reforms to wholesale energy market arrangements in Great Britain. This guide, written by Ellie Brundrett, who is one of the leads on our REMA work, is designed to assist and empower community organisations to navigate the evolving landscape of electricity market reform.
The guide covers the context, challenges and opportunities presented by REMA and its potential impact on renewable energy projects. It provides an introduction to energy markets, clarity on energy market terminology and outlines both the current GB electricity market arrangements and potential reforms. In doing so it covers:
- The current GB market arrangements including
- New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA)
- The Balancing Mechanism (BM)
- Electricity Market Reform (EMR)
- An overview of REMA including details of the initial consultation
- The reform options, including:
- Split markets
- Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP)
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
- Green Power Pools
- Contracts for Difference (CfD) reform
- How the debate has matured including challenges and progressive market reform.
This is a fast-changing topic, and the second consultation on REMA is expected to come out soon, so keep an eye on our website and LinkedIn for further updates on this topic.
