The Smart Export Guarantee has been proposed by the government to mandate suppliers to purchase power exported by small generators, following the end of the Feed-in Tariff. This is a welcome step for prosumers, community energy groups and suppliers if it encourages smart, dynamic tariffs that work for a range of users. At the very least, it will ensure that generators are not giving away energy for free.

However, getting the design right will be key to ensure the Smart Export Guarantee supports generators. Most obviously there is no floor price for generators and practical issues such as export metering are not yet clear.

Regen brough together a select group of key players, including suppliers, installers, local authorities and communities, to discuss the Smart Export Guarantee proposal directly with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. This roundtable provided an opportunity for informed and in-depth debate, looking at the benefits and challenges across the whole energy system.
