The UK has set out clear ambitions for a net zero energy system, including the need for a fourfold increase in renewable energy generation capacity, a major role for electricity storage to provide flexibility, the installation of 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 and the complete phase-out of fossil fuel vehicles to be replaced by EVs. The networks have a key role to play in ensuring that this new generation and low carbon technology can connect to the grid quickly and easily, and at the capacity and volume needed to meet net zero.
In response to this challenge, and members’ concerns around grid connections, Regen ran a session for members to discuss issues impacting access to the electricity grid. Such issues could include timescales for connections, the increase and variation in costs after accepting connection offers, and the implications of access rights and network charging changes in Ofgem’s Significant Code Review.
This meeting provided an opportunity to hear from the DNOs, followed by a members-only discussion to pin down the key issues that need to be addressed.
