Responding to the release of the Prime Minister’s Energy Security Strategy, Merlin Hyman, Regen’s CEO, commented:

“Overall, the Prime Minister’s Energy Security Strategy is a missed opportunity to deliver the urgent action needed to end our reliance on fossil fuels. We welcome the increased ambition for offshore wind, hydrogen and solar, but there is a lack of clear action to deliver these targets.

The most effective way to boost energy security now is to ramp up support for energy efficiency and to unlock the pipeline of shovel-ready renewable projects ready to deliver electricity quickly and at lowest cost. Paired with delivering investment in critical network infrastructure and accelerating the deployment of energy storage, this would put the UK on a path to greater energy independence, lower energy bills and closer to net zero.”

On the lack of measures to reduce bills, Fraser Stewart, energy justice thought leader and project manager at Regen, commented:

“While the strategy is bold in some respects, it does not provide any real support to people struggling with their energy bills and the wider crisis today. Slow and expensive infrastructure in a few years’ time will do little to help families who can’t afford to turn their heating on now or pay their rent at the end of the month.

With prices set to rise again in the winter, there is serious risk that the strategy leaves increasing numbers of people in fuel poverty, in the lurch of a growing crisis that requires far more immediate attention.”
