Project duration: July 2020 – March 2023

Across Greater Manchester, this project is looking at how the electricity needs of the GM city-region can be met through local innovations to help them achieve their target of becoming a zero-carbon emissions city region by 2038.

The Greater Manchester Local Energy Market is a 2-year project that sees Greater Manchester Combined Authority and 11 partners work together to look at how we adapt our local energy system. This includes how to accommodate shifts in supply and demand from the expected increases in electric vehicles. It’s the first project of its kind to be delivered at scale across a city-region.

The project is funded by InnovateUK (opens in a new window) and the 11 partners are:

  • Bruntwood
  • OvoEnergy
  • Carbon Co-Op
  • Hitachi
  • Daikin
  • Cornwall Insight
  • Graham Oakes Consulting
  • Cadent
  • Regen
  • Electricity North West
  • Northwards Housing

The project will investigate ways to increase the use of smart technologies and local storage of energy to spread the increase in peak loads these changes may bring. It will also factor in the increases in our population and number of homes.

The project vision combines two key themes:

  1. A place-based approach to Local Area Energy Planning (LEAP), bringing together the demands of the energy transition with a traditional local authority-led approach to planning, enabling us all to understand where and what we need to retrofit, where to place future energy assets and to support the network operators to plan based on an informed regional position. New services and tariffs to support and enable the changes and measure identified through the Local Area Energy Planning.
  2.  The design and development of unique tools required to optimise how we use, trade and supply energy across the region in the form a new Local Energy Market (LEM).The GM LEM will support the integration of new smart technologies across heat, power and transport, capable of responding to local energy network distribution and national energy transmission.

The design for the project puts customers at the heart of our approach, incorporating commercial property clients, early adopter owner occupiers, social housing tenants and the public sector. This approach creates an understanding of customer needs and energy usage levels. Recognising the economic, environmental and societal challenges the energy transition presents, the project involves citizens, the public and private sector and seeks to protect the most vulnerable in society from the impact of rising energy bills or poor-quality homes.

The consortia has commissioned the Energy Systems Catapult to deliver the first region-wide Local Area Energy plan, encompassing all 10 districts from street level to Energy network.

KrakenFlex will support the design and integration of the new Local Energy Market.

Regen is leading on the investor relations and business plan work package, developing an investor prospectus that will setout the roadmap of the LEM from now until 2038 and how it can be achieved. We are also supporting other partners on the business models, buildings and user-centric design work packages.

Project duration: March 2020 – March 2022

Regen is a partner in a new £3 million Innovate UK-funded project to deliver a detailed design of a smart local energy system for Rugeley Town in Staffordshire and its local area, including the 2,300 houses being built in the former ENGIE Rugeley coal-fired power station. The post-industrial town, and the large brownfield development, is an opportunity to assess the options for a smart local energy system, using proven technologies at scale. This project will focus on user-centric approaches to engagement, business models and marketplace design, bringing together a number of leading organisations that are delivering solutions in the heat, transport and power sectors.

The funding secured is part of the UK Government’s (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy) £21m Detailed Design of Smart Local Energy Systems programme, part of a wider Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund programme called Prospering from the Energy Revolution.  It aims to create a pipeline of highly innovative, ambitious and investable local UK energy systems that will be ready to roll out across the country over the next decade.

Regen is leading on the policy and regulation work package, reporting and collating the latest changes and the impact on the Zero Carbon Rugeley project. We are also supporting other partners on the business models, buildings and user-centric design work packages.

Project duration: October 2019 – March 2021

Regen is a partner in a new £4 million Innovate UK-funded project to install 150 rapid chargepoints in Exeter and the surrounding area. The technology is a world-first that combines rapid (50kW DC and 20 kW AC) chargepoints, with lithium-ion energy storage, to reduce and buffer the impact of the installation on the electricity network. This is a solution to a significant barrier to the rollout of further rapid and ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Electric Vehicle

The project will source electricity produced from a nearby solar farm, owned by Gamma Energy, to supply the chargepoints via a sleeving electricity supply arrangement. Co-Cars will provide cost-effective, on-street Renault Zoe electric vehicle rental cars to boost awareness and adoption.

Regen will monitor when and how often the charging points are used, support engagement with local users and review and evaluate the potential for other areas to benefit from the technology.

The project has created the Rapid Charging Exeter brand and website – https://rapidchargingexeter.co.uk/.

Regen has created this forum to bring together organisations engaged in the electric vehicle revolution with those involved in the electricity system to discuss the challenges and opportunities from the growth of the electric vehicle market.

The forum includes regular events on topics including:

This series began at the end of 2018 after the launch of  Regen’s publication“Harnessing the Electric Vehicle Revolution” in London. There was a strong view at the event that there is a need for greater dialogue and joint working to tackle topics such as smart charging, linking up EVs with renewable generation and opportunities to provide services to the electricity network. We are, therefore, setting up this forum of businesses, local authorities, utilities, and policymakers as an opportunity for discussion, networking, and collaboration.

Organisations engaged with the forum include:

EV And ES

The forum series is run in partnership with Burges Salmon and Cenex

ReWiRE has set up a focused initiative to highlight the women working within the electric vehicle sector.

The aim is to spread ReWiRE’s diversity and development targets into the electric and autonomous vehicle sector, and help women in the sector find their voice and promote their value.

The group is composed of approximately 25 key players from the electric and autonomous vehicle sector. They meet on a regular basis to share ideas and discuss key challenges and opportunities in the EV space, from both a market and a women’s point of view.

6a78429b Ff14 4466 Be0c 4bacfcdedbd8 Large

Through our work with ReWIRE, we’ve identified key actions that companies can do to address the gender disparity and encourage women to stay in the sector and move up into more senior positions. These include:

  • Find a way to measure diversity and ensure people see and think about it. Until people look at the raw figures, they just won’t see the problems.
  • Address recruitment practices to ensure they are as fair as possible.
  • Look at ways to provide more flexibility. We need to stop looking at jobs in terms of set boundaries, and instead look at the outcomes. By increasing flexibility, senior positions would become more achievable for a great number of people.

However, it’s not just about the organisations, it is important that women build their external profiles too. ReWiRE helps in this by supporting women to put themselves forward for speaking slots, chairing and interviews and providing help in building their online brand. You can read the paper we launched underlining the role of women as drivers of change in the energy transition here.

If you would like to be involved, or find out more information about the next meetings and actions, you can contact Rachel Hayes, ReWiRE founder.

Regen has worked with Western Power Distribution (WPD) and the Energy Networks Association (ENA) on a range of animations to communicate complex and technical topics in a concise and visual way. We are leading the sector in the delivery of animations as communication tools to explain the challenges ahead for the energy networks. Explaining how key technologies such as electricity storage and electric vehicles are due to revolutionise the energy system and provide new opportunities. As well as how key projects such as the Open Networks project will help with the evolution of our energy networks. See some examples below.

The growth of electric vehicles (published July 2018)

Electricity storage (published June 2017)
