This event highlighted the top-line issues facing the community energy sector before a more in-depth discussion on one of the potential solutions to support it: shared ownership.

Confirmed panellists who spoke about shared ownership included:

  • Jake Burnyeat, managing director, Communities for Renewables
  • Monika Paplaczyk, investment director, Thrive Renewables
  • Rebecca Willis, professor in energy and climate governance, University of Lancaster
  • Paul Phare, development manager, Energy4All

The community energy sector is a vital part of the UK energy industry and an essential ally for a fair and just transition to a zero-carbon future.  The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published its call for evidence to consult on the barriers to community energy projects. Using the evidence and information from this call for evidence, the government will be better placed to understand the issues facing the sector.

This provided an opportunity for us all to raise the key challenges facing the sector – and the potential solutions. Alongside community energy organisations, we encouraged those adjacent to, or outside of, the community energy sector such as local authorities, commercial developers and businesses to attend this event and respond to the consultation to create a stronger low-carbon sector.
