Labour has set the political agenda with its plans for rapid growth in wind and solar. Comparing these against net zero pathways from National Grid and the CCC shows they are highly ambitious, but not completely outside the scenarios being considered by the industry.
What all political parties now need to focus on is the practical measures needed to deliver ambitious renewable electricity targets.
Regen and the Electricity System Operator will shortly be publishing our updated version of our ‘Day in the Life’ report on how a net zero power system would operate. The key lesson from that work is that measures to increase grid capacity, flexibility, smart demand side response and a smarter control room are equally important as new renewables.
