Decarbonising heat is one of the most difficult challenges for the UK’s net zero journey and a fundamentally local challenge. Heat networks are a critical area of development, with the Heat Networks Zoning policy being an especially live policy area for several local authorities.
This group explores challenges and policies that impact heat networks, with the local authorities actively pursuing their development in their areas. The Department of Energy Security and Net Zero is engaged with the group and some of the challenges we are exploring include:
- Heat network zoning and the impact on local areas both within and outside of zones
- The devolved nature of heat policy
- Financing and funding models for heat networks
- Delivering smaller-scale heat networks
- Heat networks in heritage areas
- Securing grid connections for heat networks.
The policy group meets quarterly, with Regen acting as the facilitator and delivering the policy outputs and technical assistance flowing from the key challenges and opportunities identified within our sessions.
